We're talking about the educational system of the first decade of the last century, that is about Spiru Haret’s era and his reforms, that contributed in building the modern Romanian education system. Now, one of this reforms implied changing the A level (UK)/high school graduation (US) exam with a so-called "examen general de verificare a cunoștințelor, a maturității gândirii în privinţa înțelegerii fenomenelor", but I don’t know what to say, I wouldn’t translate your term as A level. On the other hand I don't think is the high school admission test either.

(Și în sintagma examen de treaptă) Examen de admitere în clasa a IX-a de liceu. http://dexonline.ro/definitie/treaptă...still, during communism, it seems to have meant something else (see Andrea's question)
...by examen de maturitate, I understand baccalaureate examination...My guess is that this "examen de treaptă" must be somewhere in between these terms mentioned above...

I do not think this is talking about a junior certificate. The past kudoz question posted by Andreea makes a reference to "zece clase". There is no evidence in your text that this class exam is also referring to the same age group. Or is this a term used only for the junior groups in Romania?

my texts depicts the educational background of the historian from my first question. I have no idea what this "examen de traptă" means, probably at the turn of the XXth century. the previous text also mentions: Următoarele şcoli urmate au fost la Gimnaziul de Stat din Sibiu, Şcoala Comercială din Braşov (1907 – 1908), Seminarul teologic ortodox român din Arad, pentru ca mai apoi să urmeze cursurile Gimnaziului Superior Greco – Catolic din Blaj în vederea absolvirii examenului de maturitate.
As far as I understand it refers to that exam from the question posted below by Andreea Mighiu?!?!?tnx

Can you please explain exactly what this is for, the age group, and what it leads to. I can give a term either specific to UK or USA, or which may cover English language generally, so can you also please give readership. Thank you. Lara
