Translating an academic paper entitled "Territórios e populações “marginais” em tempos de desenvolvimento" and am not sure how best to translate this phrase. 'Social interstices' appears to have been used by Marx, but I'm not sure if reference is being made to that here. To UK English. Thanks for your help!

Usualmente, tanto nos relatórios dos serviços sociais que atendem a esses usuários da assistência, quanto nas ações das forças policiais que os reprimem, e mesmo na produção bibliográfica mais tradicional acerca dos grupos estudados aqui, a dinâmica social que os caracteriza tem sido descrita na chave da ausência.
