child soldiers used as 'escudos humanos, trabalhadores, escravos sexuais'. Eurodicautom translates 'escudos humanos' as 'human shields'. I wonder if the correct term is not 'human pawns'.

People are used as "pawns" when they are manipulated by others. In chess, pawns are used in this way but also sacrificed, whence your confusion, I believe.
