Unemployment benefit Explanation: I think that the use of the word "insurance" in this case is a bit tricky. In the UK the term "unemployment insurance" gives an idea of a private run fund (paid the individual or the employer) which provides income protections for loss of earnings as a result of unemployment. However, "seguro-desemprego" is a government run benefit. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/C2518 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment_benefit |

Jobseekers' Allowance Explanation: This is the current term in the UK for what was formerly called unemployment benefit, or informally "the dole". This reflects a change in philosophy, by which New Labour limited this perk to a maximum of six months (hence "Allowance") and only for those who are effectively seeking employment (hence "Jobseekers"). In contrast, the previous term "umemployment benefit" suggested it was a benefit for being unemployed - and many people did indeed live off the government rather than go out to work! |

unemployment insurance Explanation: unemployment insurance -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2006-05-18 20:38:31 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Adriana - I understand what you mean but I think 'insurance' is better as linguistically it is a neutral term and could be applied to any system. The existence of unemployment benefit in a system such as the UK is essentially an 'insurance' - paid for not by the governement but through individuals' own contributions made through our national 'insurance' system. |
