Portuguese term or phrase: de peripécias
I understand peripécias refers to a specialized literary term - peripateia in English - but is there a more banal and colloquial meaning to it in Portuguese? Especially with the "de" coming before it? The sentence is: "É que chegou àquela cena dramática em que as personagens se despedem, com certeza para sempre, de peripécias nas charnecas escocesas." I'm inclined to translate it as "at the book's climax on the Scottish heaths..." but somehow this felt heavy-handed here. Any other readings I might not be aware of? Thanks!

Thanks, Nick! I think this context, together with your discussion entry of "turn of events" works well as it preserves the ambiguity you mentioned.

the adventures

Explanation:
Yes! There is.

That word is often use in north-west region and It is not very common to have ''de'' before the word 'peripécia'.

More correct would be 'as personagens se despedem DA peripécia or even better 'DAS peripéciaS'.

It is very common to use that word Informally in the sense of say something about an 'unexpected, surprising, episodic action. There is, however, a comical component with that word that relates it to the sense of mess and adventure.

It is very common to use it when we the person tries to classify an action from someone who has no experience in doing something and does it anyway AWKWARDLY.

Look, if you check SINONIMOS.COM.BR you can see that it is related to : acontecimento (happening) imprevisto (unforeseen) aventura (adventure) incidente (incident)

I think that a translation using those words would be nice.

I suggest adventures.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for the thorough explanation, Bruno. So given the presence of that "de," would you surmise the meaning of peripécias here would be something like "on an adventure on the Scottish highlands?"
