Isto é algo semelhante a um conceito da geologia, os fósseis de idade. Estes são fósseis pertencentes a espécies que viveram durante um período relativamente curto, e podem ser usados para datar acontecimentos. Neste caso, a frase "o abandono realizado duas ou três gerações após a sua fundação" diz que a ocupação durou pouco tempo, e podemos comparar esta situação ao que referi acima.
