To calculate the Levene's test you take the observations and obtain (not the squared deviation from the mean but) the absolute deviation from the median. Then, you simply do the usual one way ANOVA F-test on these absolute deviations from the medians. This is a very clever and simple test that has been around for a long time, created by Levene back in the 1950's. (See page 80 in the text.)
