Portuguese term or phrase: construindo o ser da educaçao
Hi.. this is included in the title of a paper on the importance of education in health organisations.

"Compreendendo e construindo o ser da educação"

My suggestion for this title would be "understanding and building the essence of education"

I'm not sure, though, if "o ser" can be turned into "essence"...
Is it possible to use these terms in English?

English translation:understanding and building education fundamentals
Explanation:
--understanding and building the "raison d'être" of education (another suggestion - the French original is used in English, but it will also depend on how sophisticated is your audience)

--understanding and building the essential purpose of education

--education above could also be "human development"

(re your question - I don't see a problem with "o ser" into "essence," but the construction "building the essence" did sound a bit strange - essence is not usually something you *build* - maybe another verb would make a better fit

-- understanding and developing the essential purpose of education - sounds better
