Portuguese term or phrase: cidadania
I came across the word "cidadania" as I was translating a brochure of TV programmes for a broadcaster from Brazil. In one of the programme summaries, the word was used as in "Voltada para crianças em idade pré-escolar, a série foi criada para divertir e entreter e, ao mesmo tempo, transmitir noções de amizade e cidadania." This is the sort of usage of this word that has always been an issue with me to translate into English. How would you translate it in this context? 'Citizenship' feels completely wrong to me.

civic responsibility/involvement/engagement OR: social participation

Explanation:
I don't think 'citizenship' is clear enough--it can mean so many things. Here are several other options.

"Civic Responsibility is defined as the "responsibility of a citizen" (Dictionary.com). It is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation."

**Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference.** It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.

According to the Center for Democracy and Citizenship, active citizenship is defined as ** "the act of contributing to public life and participating in solving public problems." **
