Portuguese to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Cinema, Film, TV, Drama / Legendagem / Subtitling

Portuguese term or phrase: Preto/ negro/ neguinho (a) I came across a dilemma to translate the word 'preto' 'neguinho' etc, when it is being used in a pejorative way. This happens in a Brazilian soap opera, where a character refers to a black woman as 'aquela preta' or 'aquela neguinha/ negra' or even ' você é mesmo cara de pau, neguinha safada!'. What suggestions do you have for this case? The character means to offend in the original, should I convey the same idea? Using which word? Thanks a lot!

R. Alex Jenkins Brazil 12:31 Feb 11, 2008  Personally, I wouldn't dream of using 'that' word in a subtitle. It's associated with years of hate and slavery, on the part of blacks towards whites. However, it's FINE between two blacks when referring to each other, but NOT between black and white.
