Ana, have you seen the standard of the English on that link?
'Since then, 33,000 persons have been rescued, as well as 9,000 boats and 550,000 persons had been helped.'
It even calls it 'The Portuguese Lifesaving Institute' then three lines later 'Portuguese Institute for Lifesaving'. Hardly a professional translation!

however, the name of the Federation does not leave much doubt as to the name "life saving", does it? That is why I (now) feel Teresa's translation is the correct one.

US Coast Guard is NOT the same as UK Coastguard as you can see if you look at the links, I'm not just guessing.

But the Coastguard is not an institute. Also, it would be "Guarda Costeira" in Portuguese. In order to be an institute, it must have some kind of academic/scientific activity.

This is interesting since the organization seems to cover all maritime lifesaving activities, including lifeguards on the beaches, sea rescues, etc. Somebody has translated it in the past as the "Portuguese Livesaving Institute" (http://www.ilsf.org/about/members/isn) which sounds logical.

I would say that "Coastguard" sounds a little more natural to me, but I'm not sure if they actually cover the same functions.
