Definition of jitney
plural jitneys
1 slang : nickel 2a(1)
2 [from the original 5 cent fare] : bus 1a; especially : a small bus that carries passengers over a regular route on a flexible schedule

Jitneys weren't worth a dime - just a nickel. In the early 1900s, jitney was slang for "nickel," but it wasn't long before the term was applied to a new mode of public transportation that only cost a nickel. When they were introduced in American cities at the beginning of the century, vehicular jitneys could be any automobiles that carried passengers over a set route for a cheap fare, but eventually the term was applied specifically to small buses.

Small well appointed low capacity privately owned buses operating on public routes as an alternative

Explanation:
If you are talking about the ones like we have here in POA Anne, the small red ones. there is no equivalent in English and "private buses" won't work because the many of the public bus companies here have been privatized. I thing the best thing to do is use the Brazilian term and supply a description like the one I've offered.

private buses

Explanation:
They're called "private buses" but it all depends on the context you're working in

Another option would be "fee/fare-paying shuttle buses."

Like I said, it all depends on your context.
