In both cases, the barrel and the die are usually made of a tough, wear- and corrosion-resistant alloy steel. In auger extrusion, an auger is located inside the cylindrical barrel and forces the plastic material towards the die. Piston extruders have essentially the same design, except that the auger is replaced by a piston fitted to the inside of the barrel and forces the plastic material toward the die. Piston extrusion is a batch process, whereas auger extrusion is continuous. Extrusion presses capable of exerting 900 kN or more are commercially available; however, presses of up to 250 kN capacity are more common.
