If it is clear that the benefit plan or scheme is indeed a pension or retirement benefit scheme, the target term should probably reflect this.

Well, in this case I would say the problem belongs to the author, not the translator! Benefit plan/scheme is a perfectly correct translation for the word, it does not carry different meanings.

I would translate it directly, but maybe make a note to the customer that there seems to be some discrepancy between the heading and the content?

Thank you, Leif and Charlie. My problem (and the reason I included the long-winded explanation above) is that the *subsequent* paragraph describes the defined benefit plan/scheme (ytelsebasert pensjonsordning). However ytelseordning is the heading for a paragraph that describes the accounting treatment of pensions, which seem to be of both types as the company is in transition. So I'm wondering if ytelseordning describes a broader concept (such as pension plans in general)?

I am not sure I understand - or rather: I do not fully understand.

Basically, the translation of 'ytelsesordning' would of course be 'benefit plan'. But your last sentence makes me wonder: Does it mean that the paragraph describes something else than a 'ytelsesordning', or simply htat it does not clearly state what kind of plan it is about?
