Malay term or phrase: berkaul
The dictionary gives berkaul = bernazar, but it doesn't fall in with this context:

Thanks in advance for any help. If not the translation, even its definition (in this context) will be helpful.

English translation:prayers/rituals during mourning
Explanation:
The 'berkabung' or mourning rituals, particularly for state rulers ie Sultans and other titled royalties, include special prayers (doa/tahlil arwah) and special dress (and may even have the nobat playing keening, dirgelike melodies). Only sombre black (and white). Over time, "Kaul" has come to mean general 'acts involved in making vows & paying them upon fulilment eg special prayers' and excluded the originally limited & specific usage applied by bluebloods. A familiar example is "persada" - previously used in "panca persada" ie a special 5-sided canopied stage used in royal marriage rituals. Now "persada" is commonly and popular used to mean stage (persada dunia = world stage).

panca - old spelling: pancha - is from sanskrit meaning five.
to explain these old terms, I must meander - do forgive my long-windedness...

Explanation:
mona, if you look at the last definition of 'kaul II' in KMIP, you'll see:

'..., mendoakan _to pray for_.'

- which fits the context, i.e. "... upacara berkaul..." => ... prayer offering ceremony(ies ).
