Ačiū. Kadangi Jūsų pasiūlymas sutampa ir su leidinio autorių nuomone, renkuosi jį. Manau, kad 'Trans-Nemunas region' irgi vertas dėmesio, tad į žodynėlį įvedu abu.

Sudovia/Suvalkija

Explanation:
I started to notice in the later uznemune Google sites that Sudovia was mentioned. A check of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suvalkija showed that Sudovia might be a better translation. Since there are English sites for Uznemune, it cannot be ruled out, but Sodovia, being a more common term, might be a better choice, unless the text refers to both Sudovia and Uznemune.

I was reading the Lithuanian Vikipedija article when the word finally popped to mind. The translation for uz in this instance is trans. While trans-nemunas does occur (one is an Instutute of History article) the international name is the most common, i.e. the Trans-Neman region. This would be immediately understandable in English, unlike uznemune.

Trans-Neman / Trans-Nemunas region

Explanation:
On the basis of Uzdniestre - Transnistria, also known as Trans-Dniester or Transdniestria, the corrrect translation for non-Lithuanians (so they would immediately understand the thought) for the region on the other side of the Neman (Nemunas) prior to the 19th century when it became known as Sudovia (Suvalkija) would be the Trans-Neman (international name for the Nemunas) or Trans-Nemunas (http://www.istorija.lt/en/archaeology.html) region. While Dzukija is usually not changed to another form, Žemaitija is often translated to the standard English form of Samogitia. Because Uznemune is a descriptive name, not a registered town name such as Uztilte village, for an international region that lies in both Lithuania and Poland, it would be more appropriate to translate it to an international form, esp. since a large portion of the region has not been under Lithuanian control for a long time, having been under Prussian control during the Commonwealth. In other words, during the entire time the name Uznemune has been used to describe this region, part of it has never been under Lithuanian control. And if it refers to just the area in the modern state of Lithuania, then it is definitely just descriptive term, not an official term. It is, of course, quite possible to put the Lithuanian term in parentheses the first time it occurs.
