Hi.

I have been translating an article that contains the following quote from 蜻蛉日記 (translated into English as "The Gossamer Years"):

雪風いふかたなうふりくらがりて

I assume it has to do with wind mixed with snow, but I do not know what the sentence means exactly. I have never studied classical Japanese and I usually do commercial translation. Also, I have no access to libraries with Western translations of this text (at the moment I am in China), so any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Explanation:
Hi, this answer largely owes cinefil's reference.
蜻蛉日記 is written in 10th century, so naturally it is in archaic form.

To put it in modern Japanese, it sounds something like ....
雪交じりの風が言葉に表せないほと強く吹き付けて、天も地も暗くなった

I did not translate いふかたなう (unspeakablly) in fear that it may disturb the thought process of the reader. Afterall, this is a poem.
Of course you would inprovise and insert that in a manner you see fit.

BTW, 蜻蛉 to be "gossamer"!!! Whose translation is that? Wonderful!

Asker: Thanks a lot! It's clearer now I know the kanji. Do you have any suggestion on how this part of the sentence would sound in modern Japanese?Something like 「雪風が（？）降り（降ってきて）、暗くなった」? I still don't understand the middle part in kana.
