Children's Meeting

Explanation:
Maybe the context is different, but I've mostly heard it used in an informal / popular settings.
I actually took part in my nieces' 子ども会 last summer, which was an informal gathering of schoolchildren from the area (a small town in Shiga pref.), at the village function hall, we had fruit juice, a magic show etc...

Dictionary (http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/leaf/jn2/80757/m0u/ ) gives a definition stressing both association and activities 子供たちの集団、またはその活動

I've never encountered the concept outside japan, but Children's Meeting is commonly used for church related activities, which is maybe the closest. Other options might be "Children's Meet", "Children's Party", "Children's day" ....

If we're actually talking about an association or group, more than a specific event, I'd probably go for something less formal than "association" or "society", since they probably don't have that much of an associative nature, maybe something like :
"Children's Club" or "Children's Group", as in the XYZ Children's Club.. These could also be combined, XYZ Children's Club's Party / Meeting /Gathering / Jamboree

hope this helps

neutral  Kieran Maynard (X): Sounds strange. "Local playgroup" is more natural as an explanation.

-> thanks, but "local playgroup" doesn't really work to describe an event, and it's also used this way in my experience. Really depends on context :)

playgroup, youth grup

Explanation:
