skirted nut Explanation: Why "skirted", because "Skirt Nut" seems to have been bought as a proprietary product name (linked 2), even though many suppliers disregard that distinction. Link 1 explains the origin of this term. (a light wicker cage ladies of the court used to wear inside their skirt to give it more volume) Link 2 cites one application of it, the most common one being the nuts used to tighten a wheel to their wheel bearing and hub. The idea of it is to provide each of the nut used maximum contact area with the piece tightened to minimise the slippage and loosening that eventually does occur through the vibrations that such an assembly sustains when worked. Depending on the application and/or the torque specs set, that nut skirt can take many different shapes: plain flat, for max. contact, inverse conical to retain that anti-splippage property over a wider range of tightening torques, with both central and lateral threads, etc.... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2017-07-11 05:19:07 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- One more point I left behind: Why ン between パニエ and ナット? suspect a short for の that gemminated with the initial phoneme of ナット. Not your gut feeling, everyone? :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2017-07-11 05:36:29 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Oops! apologies for this rushed upload: "to their wheel bearing and hub" should read "to its wheel bearing and hub." PAN round nut/round PAN nut/PAN-type nut/PAN nut/PAN Explanation: I am not really sure about this, but I did some googling. PAN seems to be an abbreviation for this product, but I couldn't find what it stood for. I think the エン might mean "round" in this case. Maybe they made it パニ instead of パン because パンエン is harder to say than パニエン. Anyway, this is just what googling got me in a few minutes, so I recommend looking into it more. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2017-07-11 02:17:14 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I have also found that there are nuts called "pinion" nuts. This could be what you are looking for. Check out the google image results for pinion nut and compare them to the pictures of the product on the site. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day5 hrs (2017-07-12 06:01:45 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Also try googling ピニオンナット and see if those images look like what is on the website. I think they may have just guessed at the pronunciation with their katakana interpretation or it's a typo. It would be very rare for a company to have a totally unique type of nut with its own unique name that doesn't show up anywhere else on the internet. I am thinking they must have written it wrong. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day6 hrs (2017-07-12 06:13:00 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Ok, some more googling. Could PAN stand for pinion axle nut? http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Ford-Rear-Pinion-Axle-Nut-E8TZ-4... |
