I agree that in English, "machine room" sounds more like a heavy equipment room, such as the room that would contain a building's power generators or elevator motors and controls...

Note: The nuance here is that the backup tapes will be stored near the servers on which the data primarily resides, and that tape is readily available if a restore is needed. The other tapes are stored offsite for data redundancy. These are normally subjected to a rotation schedule.

Sorry, another note. In my own company, our Japanese engineers tend to call it the \"machine room\" or Englishized \"comms room\" but when we discuss with the global team we usually call it the server room.

Also, the main server room at our corporate headquarters is called the data center.

agree  Mikito Oki: Aye to the 'server room'. Tapes are usually stored in a storage room. p.s. I just stash'em in my desk drawer for added security ;-P

  -> At our company, the tapes are stored in a locker inside the server room for a week, and then they are rotated to offsite storage where they are kept for a year. Larger companies or managed data centers generally have a separate tape storage room, though.
