English translation:On purification and defilement
Explanation:
"Defilement" is frequently used as the translation for けがれ when discussing Japanese folk customs and taboos, though "impurity" or "pollution" are also common. It is usually paired with "purity" or "purification" in English, though I guess I never really noticed until now that this is rendered はれ (晴れる). For that slight uncertainty on my part, I'm scoring my confidence 4 rather than 5. I suppose if you want to be fastidious and have a nice looking match, you could go with "Regarding purity and impurity."

Incidentally, as you might (or might not) gather from the EOS entry, I usually think of purfication as はらえ (払え).

-> Well, in certain circumstances you could use the distinction between "sacred" and "profane." However, I think it quite unlikely that it would be appropriate here, given the prevalence of discourse on purity and defilement in J folk religion.

It is in this belief system that the fundamental separation between the sacred and the profane is most clear.
