l'azienda ha ospitato le più importanti rental companies europee

Italian translation: l'azienda ha ospitato le più importanti rental company europee

01:05 Feb 5, 2013
Italian language (monolingual) [PRO]
Names (personal, company) / rental companies
Italian term or phrase: l'azienda ha ospitato le più importanti rental companies europee
The context is a text regarding the representatives of audio rental companies visiting an Italian loudspeaker manufactuer

Using "rental companies" in an Italian text, I would have used the feminine article, as "company" is società in Italian, however, the general rule - apparently rather flexible - is to use the gender of the Italian equivalent - which is "service" - but "i più importanti rental companies" just terrible to my ear....
An obvious solution would be to write "i più importanti service europei", but my client prefers "rental companies"
Can anybody help, please?

Selected answer:l'azienda ha ospitato le più importanti rental company europee
Explanation:
Hi, I'm a little confused too, but if what you are after is a confirmation about the correct gender use, your sentence is perfectly fine. You use "le" because the article refers to "companies", which is feminine in Italian (aziende). You could use the masculine form by introducing "settore":

"l'azienda ha ospitato i più grandi nomi europei del settore rental" (I would say "aziende europee del settore rental" but "azienda" is already used as a subject).

So, if your client has a terminologic preference I would comply: the solution you provided is correct (hoping I got your dilemma right!).
What I would edit is the plural form: in Italian foreign words stay unchanged: "l'azienda ha ospitato le più importanti rental companY europee". HTH
