La parte anteriore è appiattita, con il muso allungato a formare una sorta di rostro; la parte posteriore, invece, mantiene la forma cilindrica, più tipica degli squali.
Si nutrono di crostacei, molluschi ed altri piccoli animali che catturano sul fondale, potendo anche utilizzare il rostro per smuovere la sabbia e scavare alla ricerca di prede.
