A Luigi XVIII – re costretto a “octroyer” una costituzione molto “strizzata” e morto nel 1824 - succedeva il fratello minore, il bigotto Carlo X, conte di Artois. Gli Orléans, ramo cadetto ma con pieni diritti a succedere, erano stati esclusi da un Parlamento ultraconservatore per il ricordo troppo scottante del voto di Luigi Filippo “Egalité” – pur convinto sostenitore della Rivoluzione al punto di essere chiamato “le Citoyen Égalité – a favore dell’esecuzione di Luigi XVI.
Non contava che in passato avesse fatto molte elargizioni ai poveri, avesse fatto costruire sulle sue proprietà interi quartieri di negozi, botteghe artigiane, caffè e ristoranti e avesse aperto i suoi giardini al popolo: il suo liberalismo era sospetto. I rivoluzionari pensavano che volesse spianarsi la strada per diventare re,** anche se sarebbe stato il primo re liberale e costituzionale di Francia. **
