Can anyone help me with this sentence? I'm translating an atlas and this is one in a list of random facts about France:

'Le attività portuali tra Bordeaux e Nantes-Saint-Nazaire sono al servizio delle principali rotte commerciali internazionali'.

So far I've got 'Port operations between Bordeaux and Nantes-Saint-Nazaire are at the service of the main international trade routes' which I'm not happy with at all. What does it mean by 'al servizio delle' ?
