La gran parte delle parole italiane proviene dal latino (o, per esser più precisi, dal latino parlato d’uso quotidiano, il cosiddetto "latino volgare") senza soluzione di continuità, per via popolare. In questa trasmissione orale di generazione in generazione, attraverso i secoli, diverse voci hanno cambiato di significato: focus in latino era il "focolare", casa la "capanna", hortus il "giardino". Molte si sono trasformate foneticamente: il latino platea è diventato piazza, flumen è passato a fiume, (tempus) diurnum ha dato giorno.

Accanto a questo consistente nucleo ereditario di "parole di tradizione popolare", l’italiano, per adeguarsi ai cambiamenti dovuti all’evoluzione socio-economica e culturale, ha creato e riplasmato il lessico di cui necessitava, fondamentalmente attraverso tre canali di innovazione e arricchimento lessicale.
