This word, from the Greek word to teach I believe, is all about teaching. This is a book written by a "professor". As a teacher in Italy my pupils called me "professore" and just as the lire had made me a millionaire, this term elevated me to the highest rank in academia. Of course scholarly care is very close (skillful precision, I think less so - sorry Jane) and both work well in the context, reading this accolade it conjures up the idea of an author writing carefully for his students or pupils carefully explaining everthing. It is a very clear recommendation as a very good and useful text book, rather than a "scholarly" research thesis breaking new ground. Not something to be lost in translation, if of course you can avoid it and I can't think of anything better than "told with the care of a good teacher" which is pretty pedestrian in terms of style. |
