Tra il 1280 e il 1300 fu anche composta la redazione originaria del Libro di novelle e di bel parlar gentile (meglio noto col titolo cinquecentesco di Novellino: vedi la voce Il Novellino), una raccolta di ambiente fiorentino che riunisce circa cento brevi novelle, nelle quali è evidente un'ancora stretta prossimità con la tradizione degli exempla. Un breve prologo avverte infatti che l'opera raccoglie alcuni "fiori" di comportamenti cortesi che lettori "nobili e gentili" potranno imitare o riferire, per dilettare le loro compagnie: in effetti le singole novelle si risolvono quasi sempre nella presentazione di una scena in cui rapidamente s'impone un gesto o un'espressione esemplare (per lo più un motto di spirito), tale da riaffermare modi di condotta socialmente corretti. Coerentemente con la "brevità" del contenuto lo stile della narrazione si presenta essenziale, conciso, basato su una lingua dalla sintassi elementare e dal lessico nitido e immediato.

agree  Lisa Jane: Yes this expression fits well, as we do not have a direct equivalent. Fiore is meant in the figurative sense of the best part of something. As it is a citation, the Italian term should be mentioned, perhaps in a footnote.
