IMHO, the author wanted to honor them (4 distinguished artists and calling them 4 "aces" is quite good but he obviously does not know how to play poker :) Four of a kind, also known as "quads", is a poker hand containing four cards of the same rank. Four aces is quite good card but straight flush and royal flush are better in the casino.

neutral  Helen Pringle: I think that "quads" today refers to those open 4-wheel vehicles that the youngsters like to race around with. Modern fun! And nothing wrong with it.
