This is from an article on Roman coins.

La coniazione prevedeva una serie di operazioni:
• Preparazione della lega metallica la cui composizione era preventivamente fissata dall’autorità emittente;
• La preparazione dei tondelli seguendo due metodi: la fusione ***in matrici singole*** (per le monete più grandi), la fusione in serie;
• La coniazione vera e propria, mediante due coni (uno di incudine e uno di martello) recanti in incavo l’immagine del dritto e del rovescio della moneta.
