Indonesian term or phrase: triliun
" ... penyelesaian masalah XXX Rp.144,5 triliun mestinya menjadi tanggung jawab YYY."

Can someone tell me what this term ("triliun") means in news media contexts. I have never been sure, and dictionary searches are inclusive (anything from "trillion" to "quintillion" -- from 10 to the power of 10 to 10 to the power of 30!).

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

American and British English have different names for this number (10^12). American English uses \'Trillion\' while British English uses the word \'Billion\'. Bahasa Indonesia is somehow free from this bias. here are the details :

10^6 = juta
10^9 = milliar
10^12 = trilliun

For the US and the British differences, check out this web site :http://www.alt-usage-english.org/excerpts/fxbill00.html

I was trying to make a table, but sorry it appeared like that.. :-(
here\'s a better display, hopefully

10^6 = million (both US & UK)

10^9 = billion (US) ; milliard (UK)

10^12 = trillion (US) ; billion (UK)

agree  Chris Rowson (X): British English has mostly now switched to the American form, but triliun = twelve zeros is what my Indonesian (from Flores, and widely educated) teacher taught me.

quintillion

Explanation:
triliun = trilyun = "quantillion"

This is the better word for your sentence rather than the "mathematical" one.

trillion

Explanation:
number represented by 12 zeros after any number (used in US also in Indonesia) but 18 zeros after any number (in England and Germany), anybody know why there is this difference?

So your article should be about a problem about Rp 144.500.000.000.000,00, wow... a lot of money!

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Chris Rowson (X): BE used to us steps of 6 zeros, million = 6, billion = 12, trillion = 18. I think this was found excessive in America, some hundred years ago, leading to the switch to billion = 9 and trillion = 12. BE has now mostly switched, to decrease confusion.

Explanation:
For the purpose of journalism, you'd better choose between the two. (Of Course depending to whom the readers will be).
