Yang dimaksud orang dengan ayam buras adalah ayam keturunan lokal, lawan dari ayam negeri, yang, walaupun namanya seperti berasal dari dalam negeri, merupakan keturunan ayam yang diimpor. Kata buras adalah singkatan dari bukan ras [ayam negeri]. Ayam buras disebut juga dengan ayam kampung.

Ciri khas ayam negeri adalah bulunya tebal, menandakan adaptasi terhadap cuaca dingin. Tidak demikian halnya dengan ayam buras. Dulu, ayam buras memang dipelihara secara dibiarkan (free range), namun sekarang sudah banyak yang mengikuti metode peternakan modern.

Istilah ayam kampung bermakna kurang jelas, dan hal ini mempengaruhi terjemahan Inggrisnya. Kalau maksudnya adalah ayam yang dipelihara di kampung secara bebas, maka sama dengan free range chidken. Tetapi kalau hanya dilihat dari keturunannya, maka searti dengan buras, yaitu bukan dari ras yang diimpor, seperti Leghorn. Ayam buras (bukan ras) simply means that the chicken is not of the imported breed.
