If anyone is interested, I think that the most suitable alternative of the Greek names given for this project is “Hellinikon Metropolitan Park and Urban Development”, because this clarifies that the project will include a housing estate as well as a park.

Note to Nadia-Anastasia: Yes, but the Greeks call Edinburgh Edinbourgo, London Londino, New York Nea Yorki, Massachusetts Massatsousetis and many other things by many other names other than their real ones in English, so why should we English have to describe Greek things in the ways that the Greeks want us to, especially if the Greek names of things or projects do not describe them well in English or enable English speaking people to understand what they are? ……the project is called Elliniko or Hellenikon Metropolitan Park and not the Hellenikon Metropolitan Pole. At least one site also calls it the Hellenikon Metropolitan Park and Urban Development.

Frankly, many of us (strange) English people don't like the 'g' in Aghio, but since it is your country's name, we have to put up with it being there. The 'h' in the English spelling of Aghio is necessary because it causes English people to soften the 'g' and to pronounce the word in the way that it should be pronounced. If your country's academic leaders should decide to take the 'h' out of the English spelling of Aghio, most English speaking tourists will pronounce Aghio as 'Agghio' which would make it very difficult for Greek people to understand tourists asking for directions to a place beginning with the word.

If you would all like to make changes to the endings or spellings of the place names, so that my rough Greek doesn't offend your eyes, please be my guest, because I sincerely did not intend any offence or disrespect by not having taken the extra time to ensure that I had dotted every 'i' or crossed every 't'. As I have said below, I was merely more concerned with proposing a suitable translation to Voile as quickly as possible so that she could proceed with her translation with the minimum of delay. If I was wrong in doing that, I beg your forgiveness.

Yes, Elliniko-Aghio Kosma, the nominative, is the correct answer. I just noted this because the translation of place names is an interesting topic of discussion. I did not pose my question right I guess. :)

Eleni, I think you are half right. In other words, you are correct in thinking I was wrong but I am not sure that I agree with what you suggest that we should change it to. I think I should have written Elliniko - Aghio Kosma Housing Estate....., because Ellinikou - Aghiou Kosma is the genitive of both place names and we English don't normally use the genitives of place names of countries where genitive cases of nouns and names exist, but use a more standard form of the name instead. Also, although I realise that the Greek people like to call Elliniko Hellinikon in English, most if not all English people I know prefer to call Hellinikon Elliniko. To tell you the truth, when I noticed that Viole was asking for a meaning of Μητροπολιτικός Πόλος Ελληνικού - Αγίου Κοσμά, I was more concerned with helping her to find a suitable translation for those words as a group and less concerned with getting the spellings or endings of the place names absolutely grammatically correct. I must have assumed that Voile was an intelligent educated Greek lady who would have been perfectly capable of correcting any imperfections to place names herself. (To be continued....)
