Explanation: These could be the more negative meanings. It could also be defiant or arrogant behaviour, but it might not go on that list in such a case.
Thank you, Nick, and thanks to everyone. It's useful to know the possible meanings. I'm guided by the context: "bullying" / "you get pushed around" seems appropriate here. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
OK dude?
Αλλά, Bully= person who hurts, persecutes, or intimidates a WEAKER person. That is NOT a 'μάγκας'. DUDE= Old fashioned dandy(= man who is overconcerned with the elegance of his appearance(image). A 'cool' person, 'cool' meaning something unusual, modern, out of the ordinary. Dude has entered the English dictionary only some 15/20 years ago AND it is an Americanism, which is what Dylan asked, preferably.
Transphy, you are restricting yourself to one sense of μάγκας, not μαγκιά, in an incomplete web collection of slang words and expressions and nonce words. You could use this dictionary entry: http://www.greek-language.gr/greekLang/modern_greek/tools/le... though I actually prefer the more up-to-date definitions of the Academy's or the Babiniotis dictionaries, sadly not available on the web.
****Ο άνετος, cool, χαλαρός τύπος που δεν φοβάται τίποτα****
A modern day DUDE, as the Americans say. 'Μάγκας' was NEVER a bully, in the sense of imposing him/herself on others forcibly. Was a person who always 'showed off' that he/she was more modern, more 'in' the fashion of the day, more 'daring' in expressing and applying modern fashion. His/her ultimate purpose was to be the centre of attraction and to make people feel jealous of his/her actions and looks. ' There was no 'trickery' or 'chicanery' or 'bullying' to come from a 'Μάγκας'. Maybe that people around where the subject lived were 'posh', 'toffs', 'stiff upper lip' as the English say, 'unsociable', 'show-offs', 'inconsiderate' and NOT necessarily 'bullies' or 'tricksters' or 'unethical' in not paying their taxes and so on and so forth as the latter Greeks have been described to be. The Americans call these people 'DUDES' and they say these people are 'cool'
Further to my entry of earlier this morning addressed to Dylan, I would like to give an example of how the ‘μαγκιά’ of cunning, craftiness and ingenuity can cause hardship. Many people have expressed the view that one of the main reasons why such a high proportion of Greeks are presently enduring severe hardship is because such a high proportion of Greeks do not pay their fair shares of tax. The fact that these people do not pay their fair share of tax causes governments to over tax the more honest tax payers and leaves them with much less to live on. Although the people who do not pay their fair shares of tax, and their dependants, close associates and friends may regard their ability to avoid paying tax to be ‘μαγκιά’, the people that this affects naturally do not share this view.
To Dylan: Good morning. I would just like to explain why I provided my answer as an alternative to Nick’s. My first thought was that if the writer of your text was an adult and not a child, he would have had to be a bit of a wimp to complain about bullying as a hardship of living anywhere. I therefore decided to consider alternatives. Cunning and crafty behaviour can both cause hardship to others and cunningness, craftiness and ingenuity can very definitely be useful qualities for overcoming hardships. It is an undoubtable fact that many Greeks have demonstrated exceptional craftiness, cunning and or ingenuity in finding loopholes in legislation, avoiding obligations, obtaining double pensions and in engaging in a wide variety of swindles to increase their incomes and to overcome the effects of the austerity measures, and the ability of people to do this was widely considered by many in Greece to have been “μαγκιά”. A recent slogan used by the Greek tax authorities was, “Δεν είναι μαγκιά να μην πληρώσεις το φόρο σου”. However, whether or not this aspect of “μαγκιά” is suitable in your case will depend entirely on the full context of your text.
Τhe person is just listing the unpleasant sides of life, in the form of bullet points. One of them, for instance, is "Οι άνθρωποι τελείως αγενείς (97%)". With people like this - and bad pollution - it doesn't sound a very pleasant place to live! I'd say it's simply descriptive.
More context? Would this refer to the person writing this and how he/she copes with the hardships or is it used to describe the population?
