ein Mädchen für alles a man / girl Friday Explanation: Man Friday / Girl Friday - A man Friday is: "An efficient and devoted aide or employee; a right-hand man." Friday is a character in the novel Robinson Crusoe. The protagonist Robinson Crusoe rescues a young native man, and calles him 'man Friday' because he met him on a Friday. 'Girl Friday' is a term, now frowned upon, for a resourceful female assistant, made popular by the classic 1940 comedy adaptation of 'The Front Page' (His Girl Friday) staring Rosalind Russell as an ace reporter and Cary Grant as her cynical editor and ex-husband. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 mins (2006-01-24 20:45:35 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Sorry, Nesrin, just notice the 'German monolingual' bit, but maybe the English version will help you anyway. ein Mädchen für alles jemand, der alle anfallenden (niederen) Arbeiten verrichtet Explanation: jemand, der alle anfallenden (niederen) Arbeiten verrichtet wie früher, wo auf Höfen einige Mägde als Mädchen für alles eben geputzt, gekocht, Kleidung ausgebessert, Nachttöpfe geleert, Brennholz gesammelt und Kinder betreut haben. |
