Die Durchforstung ist eine waldbauliche Maßnahme. Sie dient in erster Linie dazu, den Holzertrag hinsichtlich Qualität und Masse in der Zukunft zu steigern.
Eine Pflegemaßnahme wird als Durchforstung bezeichnet, sobald nutzbares Derbholz anfällt (vgl. Kulturpflege und Läuterung).
Das dabei anfallende Nutzholz stellt eine Vornutzung dar (vgl. Endnutzung bei Kahlschlagwirtschaft).
Es lassen sich bei der Durchforstung zwei Grundformen unterscheiden:
- Negative Durchforstung
Dabei werden unerwünschten Bäume beseitigt. Unerwünscht sind v.a. schlecht geformte oder abgängige Bäume.
- Positive Durchforstung
Bei der positiven Durchforstung sucht man zuerst die Zukunftsbäume und markiert sie. Die Zukunftsbäume ("Z-Bäume") sind die Bäume, von denen man sich erhofft, sie mit dem größten Ertrag ernten zu können, also die vitalsten und dabei qualitativ hochwertigen Bäume. Danach bestimmt man die Bäume, die mit den Zukunftsbäumen direkt konkurrieren (die ein bis zwei stärksten Bedränger) und entnimmt sie.
