Air cooling is realised as standard for the larger high performance systems. It is differentiated between two basic approaches: "Push" cooling and "Pull" cooling (Picture 3).With push cooling the fans are sited below the board and "push" the air past the hot components. In contrast to this with pull cooling the fans are situated above the boards. The air is sucked (pulled) through the board cage. Both solutions have advantages and disadvantages, which may influence the life expectancy of the fan, the air flow volume, the air distribution or the assembly height of the MicroTCA systems
