napped/teased loden Explanation: Loden is the same in English: "Water-resistant material (usually green) in Austrian traditional clothing made from sheep's wool, without removing the lanolin." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loden Silvia's reference defines Strichrauen as "das Anrauen beziehungsweise Kämmen der rechten Gewebeseite mit speziell dafür ausgelegten Werkzeugen wie Stahlkratzen und/oder Naturdisteln." Anrauen means to tease, nap, or roughen: http://en.langenscheidt.com/german-english/anrauen And finally, here's someone else's translation, which I agree with: "Napped loden ('Strichloden'): a slightly fluffy, particularly soft loden cloth. http://www.countryshop.com/material_e.html Of course, no one will have the faintest idea what "napped loden" means, so I would include a sentence or two of explanation. You could even add a colourful touch by saying, as Silvia's reference says, that the napping is traditionally done using thistles. |
