hairdresser/friseur Explanation: In vielen Büchern wurde das Wort in dieser Redewendung als "hairdresser" übersetzt oder als "friseur" belassen. [...] Thomas Mann launched a furioso attack on Wagner, taking Keller's description of him as 'hairdresser and charlatan' as [...] https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&hl=tr&q=keller+wagner+charlatan&btnG= |

barber Explanation: “I wonder, too, whether these lumbering uses of the term barber originally had any connection with the notion of poor cutting; the connotations of barber in informal speech have not always been the most favorable.” Verbatim: VERBATIM: The Language Quarterly Vol II No 4 Reference: http://www.wordnik.com/words/barber |

flashy, over the top, narcissistic Explanation: Fascinating, interesting question! I would agree that any translation pointing clearly towards homosexuality would be too concrete and probably too "modern", we can't be sure that this particular association existed back then. "girlish" I could imagine as well, but I would suggest that "effeminate" would be a more adequate translation. But I still think this points in a very (too?) concrete manner in a certain direction. This is why I suggest the above - it is very free, but might just convey the correct associations. |

a bit of an aesthete / rather over-concerned with (his) appearance(s) Explanation: Based on the extended quote Johanna provides, I think this is about Wagner supposedly being overly concerned with aesthetics, liking fussy design for his environment, and possibly being overly refined in terms of his own appearance, in the view of the person quoted. I don't think effeminate or anything in that direction would be right, or at least it would be reading in too much and from a modern perspective. As a composer, he was very interested in the artistic concept of the Total Work of Art, the Gesamtkunstwerk, where all the arts were to be combined to create a harmonious whole. Other people interested in this notion, such as Henry van de Velde, Count Kessler, Carl Ernst Osthaus all had homes and working environments where all elements were designed to blend with the whole - every detail - door knobs, women's and men's dress, etc - echoed the overarching theme. It all came from Wagner's supposed understanding of aesthetics, albeit rather loosely reworked by others later on. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 hrs (2013-01-06 11:12:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I would suggest you keep Friseur and put an aesthete or a bit of an aesthete in brackets. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 19 hrs (2013-01-06 11:56:06 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Nietzsche also famously went off Wagner amongst other things because of his aestheticism and egotism, distancing himself from the cult built up around him.
