German term or phrase: Erkenntnisgewinnung
"Erkenntnisgewinnung" as a sub-heading in a project description for a doctoral thesis (subject telecommunications). The heading introduces a list of questions to be considered in the paper as the basis for the research, no further context is given. Since it is a heading and not part of a sentence, the translation would have to be kept to a short phrase. I am not familiar with any standard terminology used in such papers that might fit here, even if it is not a direct translation. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

contribution to knowledge
Explanation:
An essential part of any PhD project is that is demonstrably contributes to knowledge, so I would head it in this way.

PhD (by Publication)

Information for Prospective Candidates
Purpose of the Program

The PhD (by Publication) program enables the degree of PhD to be awarded to candidates on the basis of their original scholarly contribution to knowledge. The purpose of the program is to allow formal recognition of established researchers who have a substantial reputation and standing in their respective fields on the basis of their record of academic publication, and for whom enrolment in the University's existing PhD program would be inappropriate. A decision to award the degree of PhD (by Publication) is based on a submission comprising a collection of authored publications and an integrating paper, both of which must be at a standard appropriate for the award of the degree of PhD.

Quest for insight

Explanation:
Just an option for you, inspired by the fact that the header introduces a list of questions rather than ready-made contributions to knowledge.

Advancement of knowledge

Explanation:
There seems to be a mis-match in the context between the heading and what follows it as what follows seems to be a list of questions rather than an account of the knowledge advanced by the study.

agree  Kim Metzger: It is evidence that the student can perform as an independent and original scholar and make, as the Graduate Catalog phrases it, “a substantial contribution to knowledge.” http://www.engl.niu.edu/english/graduate/PhD_programs/disser...
