stable flies, horse flies

Explanation:
I would use stable fly rather than ankle biter, which, although very descriptive and admittedly a more accurate translation of the German, is a more colloquial term in English. Stable fly is the accepted English language common name for Stomoxys calcitrans, which, unfortunately, is cosmopolitan. And the accepted English language common name for flies of the family tabanidae is horse flies and deer flies; here is a Scottish website where the species you mentioned is referred to as the giant dark horsefly.
As a tip, if you have the Latin names of organisms, you can often get their accepted common names in the target language by googling them. I was an entomologist before becoming a translator, and the Entomological Society of America publishes a list of accepted (English language) common names, which are used in entomology textbooks, scientific articles and practical texts like this one, and I think they are more appropriate for the register of this kind of a text.
