This is one for the Swiss experts!

Wer durch Olten fährt, denkt an Business und Industrie, Verkehrsknotenpunkt für Bahn und Strassenverkehr, wärschaftes Essen und Röstigraben.

I've found out that the Röstigraben is the divide (either geographical or figurative) between French and German speaking Switzerland. My problem is rendering this in a publicity text without it sounding stilted.

Any ideas, folks?

I felt that explicit reference needed to be made to the fact that this dividing line was between French and German-speaking Switzerland (I'm not sure this would be immediately apparent to the non-culturally diverse Brits at whom the text was aimed!). But then you end up making compromises on the readability of the text and using a ten-word clause when the German has just one word! Hey-ho ... that's the way it goes, I suppose. Hi Mary,
I am of course not happy with this solution, but Röstigraben cannot and should not be translated. But you must if it is an ad for people not knowing about Switzerland.
I would change the text and say something like "hefty food and already a slight breeze from the French speaking regions.."

Just to give you an idea.

linguistic divide

Belying its deep historical resonance for the Swiss, MURTEN, 6km northeast of Avenches, has the air of a holiday town, its neat suburban streets and low-key waterfront promenade remniscent of the English south coast. It’s bang on the Röstigraben (linguistic divide), though among its 5,000 inhabitants, German speakers far outnumber francophones (who call the place Morat). It’s also one of the best preserved of Switzerland’s medieval towns, and is still encircled by its fifteenth-century walls. These days, offering nothing much to do other than strolling on cobbled lanes, sipping drinks at lakeview terrace cafés and boating around the lakes, it’s the perfect place for a lazy, romantic getaway. The Old Town’s hotels oblige with a range of “honeymoon” suites.

Roestigraben: der, in juengster Zeit aufgekommene (scherhaft) Bezeichnung fuer die Kluft in der Verstaendigung und dem Verstaendnis zwischwn deutsch- und franzoesischsprachigiger Schweiz. (Von einem "Graben" war zuerst waehrend des zweiten Weltkriegs die Rede' vgl. Inglin, Schweizerspiegel 342 ff.)
