„Schwebungen von 1 bis etwas 10 Hz zerteilen den Ton in die entsprechende Zahl deutlich wahrnehmbarer, periodischer Schwankungen oder Stöße. Schwebungen von etwa 11 bis etwa 20 Hz erzeugen ein Gurgeln des Tones und Schwebungen von mehr als 20 Hz bis zur Auflösungsgrenze verleihen den Ton einen schrillen, rauhen, kreischenden Charakter".

Thanks, everyone, I'm not completely sure how to deal with this. Apparently, "Schwebungen" are also "beats". A translation of "beats...breaking down the tone into ... beats" doesn't work. Maybe Philgoddard's idea of pulses is what I' use. I've got to think about it. Thanks again!!!

agree  Joel Schaefer: Absolutely beats, not vibrato. The context describes the effect of hearing two tones that are slightly out of tune with each other, as in Wendy's reference. Easy to demonstrate on my cello if you visit.

agree  Horst Huber (X): Your reference says "In acoustics, a beat is an interference between two sounds of slightly different frequencies". "Schwebungen" would be the cause of the "beats" and equating these would be the metonymy that confounds causes and effects.
