Please help with this sentence. It is a description of the bore of accurate muzzleloading hunting (or other) rifles. It was published in 1822 in Austria:

"Nach der Schwanzschraube zu sind zwar sehr viele Laeufe etwas weiter (dies bringt schon die Ausarbeitung derselben mit sich), aber selten von der Muendung an."

In the old days a bore that tapered slightly from breech to muzzle shot very accurately; a bore should not expand from the breech plug to the muzzle. I think this sentence is saying something similar, but in different terms than I am used to: "Forward of the breech plug many barrels are a bit wider (this is how they are made), but rarely do they taper toward the muzzle."

I understand the principle but struggle with reconciling the source language with it. Am I misconstruing the directions involved (i.e., forward of the breech plug and behind the muzzle)? Someone else's translation of this sentence would be most welcome; I have stared at it for too long. Many thanks for your help!

Asker: I could not see the meaning for the words (like the forest for the trees). I am more accustomed to seeing things from the breech to the muzzle, rather than vice-versa. Thanks again for this clarification.
