German term or phrase: Retentionsgewinnung
Teil einer Zahnarztrechnung:

Erhoehte Schwierigkeit wegen erschwerter Retentionsgewinnung.

From Wikipedia I learnt that 'Retention' is used in dentistry with various meanings. Given that we're talking about a cavity here, I don't think it's the one where a tooth remains in the bone, I think it's this one:

But how do you say this in English? Can I just say 'higher degree of difficulty to to difficult achievement of retention'?

Thanks for your help, as always!

Thanks so much to both of you, but especially to andres-larsen for all the references and the GOZ in English. I decided to go simply for retention in the end, as no context was given about how they did it. Thanks again!

preparation of undercuts for retention

Explanation:
The process of preparation usually involves cutting the tooth with a rotary dental handpiece and dental burrs to make space for the planned restorative materials and to remove any dental decay or portions of the tooth that are structurally unsound.
:
Tooth #3, the upper right first molar, with the beginning of an MO preparation. Looking into the preparation, the white, outer enamel appears intact, while the yellow, underlying dentin appears recessed. This is because the dentin was decayed and was thus removed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_restoration#Tooth_prepa...

• Rounding of internal line angle to reduce the stress concentration points in tooth preparation
3.Primary retention form.
is that form, shape and configuration of the tooth preparation that resists the displacement or removal of restoration from the preparation under lifting and tipping masticatory forces.
The retention form is affected by the type of the restorative material used.
Amalgam:
Retention is increased by the following:
• Providing occlusal convergence (about 2 to 5%) the dentinal walls towards the tooth surface .
• Giving slight undercut in dentin near the pulpal wall

Fig. 7.44: Preparation walls should have 2°-5° occlusal convergence for amalgam retention
Fig. 7.45: Undercut in dentin near the pulpal wall will helps in retention of amalgam

As not all restorations need or have undercuts or recesses in the prepared cavity we can generalise the term to "preparations of retention surfaces" depending on the shape.

Principles of Class II Amalgam Restorations in Primary Teeth
:
• Buccal, lingual, and gingival walls of proximal box should just clear contact
• Retention in box from convergence of buccal and lingual walls, not from retention grooves.
https://www.google.de/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=imgres...

Retention form
I- Retention mena in class V cavity is made by making retention grooves or retention holes. This depend on the size of cavity, in small conservative cavity , retention holes is made , while in large class V cavity , retention groves are necessary.
II- In case of more extensive class V cavity we may need to ( pins) as extraretention.
:
1- Retention holes: using a small round bur (no. 1/4) and make two holes at axioocclusal line angle and two holes at axiogingival line angle.
2- Retention groves: using a small round bur (no. 1/4) making two holes at axioocclusal line angle than connecting between them by small round bur or by small fissure bur, holding the bur in oblique direction. Same thing is done on axiogingival line angle.

Key points
• Cement-retained restorations are a traditional design option allowing for passive fit
:
Depending on abutment material, size and design (retention/wall angles) various cementation materials, ranging from temporary cements to adhesive resin cements, are used.

34. RETENTION FORM • DEFINITION-The feature of a tooth preparation that resists dislodgement of a crown in a vertical direction or along the path of placement. • In practice retention and resistance are closely related and they are not always clearly distinguishable. • Only dental caries and porcelain failure outrank lack of retention as a cause of failure of crown and FPD www.indiandentalacademy.com
35. FACTORS AFFECTING RETENTION • Magnitude of dislodging forces • Geometry of tooth preparation -Taper -Surface area -stress concetration -Type of preparation and secondary retentive features • Roughness of surfaces being cemented • Materials being cemented • Type of luting agent • Film thickness of luting agent www.indiandentalacademy.com
:
55. • If axial wall left unveneered, retention is achieved by substituting a grooves, boxes or pinholes for the missing wall. • Secondary retentive features doesnot significantly affect the retention because the surface area is not increased significantly. • But where these features limits the path of withdrawal, retention is increased www.indiandentalacademy.com
56. • Surface roughness: – Adhesion of dental cements depends primarily on projections of the cement into microscopic irregularities. – Jorgensen found retention of castings cemented with ZnPO4 cement on test dies with a 10° taper to be twice as great on preparations with 40µm scratches than 10µm. – Retention increases when restoration is roughened or grooved. – Failure rarely occurs at the cement tooth interface. So roughening tooth preparation hardly influences retention. www.indiandentalacademy.com
https://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=https://image.slideshare...

31. Secondary Resistance & Retention Form: This step is needed in complex and compound tooth preparations where added preparation features are used to improve the resistance and retention form of the prepared tooth. These are as following: Grooves and coves: Wherever bulk of dentin is present, grooves are prepared without undermining the adjacent enamel. Coves are small conical depressions Grooves are placed in prepared in healthy dentin to provide additional axiofacial and retention. axiolingual so as line angles to increase retention of the restoration
32. Slots or internal boxes: These are mainly used in amalgam restorations. They are 1.0 to 1.5 mm deep box like grooves prepared in dentin to increase the surface area. These are SLOT prepared in occlusal box, buccoaxial, linguoaxial and gingival walls. Locks: Locks are usually prepared for amalgam class II restoration in the proximal or occlusal box of class II
33. Pins: Different types of pins of various shapes and sizes are used to provide additional retention. They can be used in all types of restorations like amalgam, composite and cast restorations. Skirts: Skirts are prepared for providing additional retention in cast restorations. They increase the total surface area of the preparation. Skirts can be prepared on one to all four Skirt in cast restoration sides of the preparation depending upon the required helps in increasing retention retention
34. Amalgampins: Amalgampins are vertical posts of amalgam anchored in dentin. Amalgampins increase the retention and resistance of complete restoration. Beveled enamel margins: Beveling of the preparation margins increases the surface area and thus, the retention in composite restorations. Enamel wall etching: Etching results in microscopic roughness, which increases the surface area and thus
35. Dentin conditioning (etching and priming): Etching and priming of the dentin surface done in some restorative materials increases the retention. Adhesive luting cements: Adhesive luting cements increase the retention of indirect restorations.
