That's right - TV channels sell spots for advertising purposes.

A spot is a unit of time, but not a TV commercial.
An advertising block, slot or commercial break is divided up into spots.

If it's on TV, I always tend to use TVC - TV commercial. I abhor the expression "spot" (Out damned spot!) - along with words like anspruchsvoll, Ausstattung and Gestaltung (and quite a few more overused expressions that are virtually untranslatable - maybe we should make a list and distribute it to our clients :-)

This is about signing for artists rights (music, visuals, film) to make sure that the royalties are paid to the GEMA by producers, advertisers or whoever uses it for commercial purposes.

In this case, the rights are strictly limited and preclude the use on YouTube, etc.

The GEMA collects the royalties for every piece of music etc. when it is publicly aired (on the radio, on TV, in an online commercial or when you buy a CD) on behalf of the artists and pays them to the composer, lyricist and anyone else with intellectual rights to the content.

So your Spotmotiv - could be a jingle, for instance - is specific visual/music content of the commercial TV ad (or whatever).

A "GEMA Anmeldung" is the form you have to fill in to request the use of such content for commercial purposes.

If the use is approved by the artists, or their agents, a fee is due every time the content used is aired.

... tough I'm confused with regard to her use of "spot". I'm not a native speaker but until now my thinking was that "spot" should be used with some caution in English, as it has (semi) false friend status in German (in this context and IMHO). I believe a "Werbespot" is just an "advert" in most cases.

I'm wondering about this because I'm translating something about the very topic at the moment ...

Lizenzgeber, die Agentur und die Produktionsfirma sind nicht berechtigt, die Werbespots auf öffentlich zugänglichen Webseiten, insbesondere nicht auf YouTube oder anderen Drittwebsiten, zu veröffentlichen.
Die AG verpflichtet sich für jedes ***Spotmotiv*** die vom Verlag vorgelegte GEMA Anmeldung für audiovisuelle Werbespots zu unterzeichnen.
Diese werden zu Dokumentationszwecken von Z bei der GEMA eingereicht.
