German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Mechanics / Mech Engineering / automated QA testing
German term or phrase: Handling
"Handling zum Kontaktierung"

Context: Operating instructions of a test bench used for testing automotive steering pumps. The word [[Handling]] is used in the source to refer to the part of the test bench that makes contact with the pump. It is clearly a loanword, but I am not familiar enough with the field to say whether [[handling]] is used is the English.

Image: https://imgur.com/qPzpAQZ - the purple element is the component receptacle.

The pump to be tested is seated in a receptacle, then, from what I gather, the test bench automatically establishes electrical and hydraulic connections with the pump using this "Handling". If [[handling]] is not used as an English equivalent, would an accurate translation be "contact(ing) head"?

Examples from the text:

handling (by manipulators, grippers) and handling devices
Explanation:

* The manipulators/positioners are attached to the welding console for placement and making contact just like the XXX.
* The arrangement of handling devices for the electrical and pneumatic connections in the front area facilitates the testing.
*The test bench is exposed to oil contamination during handling of tested assemblies.

Thus a manipulator with six moving links and as many revolute pairs is called a 6-axis manipulator. Note that the actuator used to power the gripper (open and close fingers etc) is not counted as an “axis” – since the function of the actuator on the gripper is solely to open and close the fingers. Also, the actuator for the gripper does not contribute to the positioning and orienting capability of the end-effector.

Grippers have always been an important topic within (production) research, being the technical analogy for human grasping. Together with the handling device they are attached to, grippers handle, move and sometimes even manipulate goods within automated industrial processes using different principles to transfer the force of the handling device.

It appears, then, that the device that automatically makes contact with the pumps does not have a canonical translation, although it can be called "handling device", "positioner" or manipulator. I am not as sure about "gripper", which does have a more specific pincer or jaw form not present on this "Handling".

agree  philgoddard: I think your answer is a bit long and confusing, but I agree with manipulators/handling devices. The translation may also sometimes be "handling", as in Juchi's last example.

-> Yes, that's why I offered several options to avoid repetitions and or to specify details.
