German term

Korundschleifkörper

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Hi there!

I am translating a deburring-grinding machines manual, ... can you help me with this term: Korundschleifkörper

The complete sentence is: Für die Bearbeitung werden Korundschleifkörper mit einem Durchmesser von 762 mm benutzt.

Thanks!

Sigrid

Discussion

Yorkshireman Aug 15, 2016:
762/130 - revised The only place this turns up (so far) is for a carborundum (silicon carbide = Karborund) grinding wheel manufactured by Busch. That means that corundum (aluminium oxide = Korund) in the original sentence could well be incorrect. If I were you, I would check this with your client.

BTW: as Gudrun notes, the English on the site and in the PDFs they publish is "ziemlich haarig".

The specs D1 and L1 used by Busch obviously refer to the diameter and thickness of the wheels/discs, and the D1 value corresponds to the diameter after the 7xx number divided by ten.

Until you have confirmation from your client of what is correct, both belt and wheel could be viable options for the reasons stated.

A little more research: Jowitt in the UK does actually produce grinding wheels up to a size of 762 mm.
"Peripheral Grinding Wheels:
Sizes: 100 to 762 mm outside diameter.
Recesses: Plain, single and double recesses. "

thank you
disagree Lancashireman : Not at 762 millimetres. This is the standard diameter for a sanding belt.

neutral Yorkshireman : Agree - with the reservation that it may actually be carborundum

PS Could you please close this question yourself instead of leaving it to be closed automatically. Unless you do so, 'grinding wheel' will be selected at the end of two weeks, as it has already accumulated two agrees.
Thanks

Reference:

grinding wheel / abrasive wheel not 762 mm!

Please note that a grinding wheel is unlikely to be 762 mm (= 76.2 cm) in diameter.

The following links shows loads of grinding wheels. One of them is described as Ø 762/130.

The first figure (here 762) seems to be the part number while the second figure (here 130) seems to be the diameter.

The link may be of general interest to you, but just at a short glance I have already noticed several errors in the English.

agree Lancashireman : with "grinding wheel is unlikely". It's a sanding belt (see above). // Asker's complete sentence: "The complete sentence is: Für die Bearbeitung werden Korundschleifkörper mit einem Durchmesser von 762 mm benutzt." 762 millimetres

I am fairly certain that it is a grinding/abrasive wheel (but 762 does not mean mm). A sanding belt would probably not be called Schleifkörper.
