German term or phrase: Reißen (in this context)
I am looking for the correct translation of "Reißen" when used as a glass engraving technique. The only text I have is:

Reißen: Die Fläche wird mit möglichst gleichmäßigen Strichen gefüllt.

Obviously I cannot use "tear" or similar in English. Or is that used in this context?

Thanks in advance.

disagree  Johannes Gleim: Hatching ist Schraffieren. Dazu benutzt man üblicherweise Schreibzeug. (Bleistift, Kugelschreiber usw.), aber nicht zum Gravieren. "Gravieren" ist "engraving". Darnach wurde nicht gefragt, nur nach Reißen (vgl. Riss).

What materials scratch glass?
the short answer is anything with a knoop hardness greater than 5. This is somewhat misleading as it depends on the type of glass but for the generic window glass and household glass that applies. So anything harder than a decent tool steel which includes almost every hand tool you might encounter, most gem stones (sapphire, diamond, emerald, ruby(basically the same as sapphire and a lot of others). Many minerals like jade, quartz, feldspar, tourmaline and many others. I think that covers all the common materials there are many industrial materials that work too including carborundum, zircon, garnet and most ceramics.

Why does glass scratch?
:
rue, some might know that glass can scratch if scraped. Some might even be able to identify which glass is safe for a scraper and which isn’t. But do they know why some glass is fine and some is prone to scratching?
Here’s and explanation. Most of the glass that gets installed these days is tempered. That means it gets heat-treated during the manufacturing process. This tempering strengthens the glass, making it more resistant to breakage and thereby making it safer for the end user.

Don't Scratch Glass
Fortunately, scratching the glass is a rare occurrence but if you are careless, it can happen quickly.

Precision glass cutter
Abstract
To precisely scratch a sheet of glass and then tap it to sever it into two separate pieces of glass while maintaining perpendicularity of the glass cutter handle to the glass surface, without twisting the wrist or arm while applying downward pressure,

1 Glass Cutter A glass cutter is used to "score" (scratch) glass in order to cause a controlled breakage. Two styles are shown — 1a is a comfort-grip glass cutter; 1b is a pistol-grip glass cutter.

Scribe and Break Machines for LCD Manufacturing.

Scribe and break method for glass cutting is widely used to separate each Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) panel from a large mother substrate cell. The scribe-break method does not use water or heat, generates little dust and is an excellent method for preventing product contamination. Scribing is key to the glass cutting process, a median crack created by the scribing without lateral cracks is needed for clear cutting of the mother cell. Several items affect scribing, such as scribe wheel diameter, scribing wheel angle, scribing load, scribing speed. Also scribing conditions depend of course on the used glass type and its scribability.

5. To scribe the glass, a gentle touch is required. If you're going to scribe a straight line (most common), we recommend using a piece of styrene strip as your straight edge
:
7. Lightly drag your scribing tool along the side of the styrene to scribe (scratch) the glass. Too lightly and no scribing will be done, too much pressure and you'll break of move the glass.

Glass Scribing
Its super-easy and lots of fun: Individually decorated glasses, vases, etc. Beginners and advanced hobbyist are perfectly equipped with the Engraver Set by PROXXON. Patterns and a trial glass are included in the set: You can start right away!

If you take a piece of glass and try to break it without first scribing it, it will seem quite strong and will resist breaking.
https://www.google.de/search?biw=935&bih=667&ei=wf-cXNiHM4PK...

Cutting glass substrates with the Glass Cutter begins by scribing a straight line of the glass in the position of the desired cut. The scribe makes a fissure on the surface of the glass and when pressure is applied the remaining thickness of the glass breaks along the scribed fissure.
https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd...

1. Find a glass cutter which has slots in the side (the one pictures on the left) then position the glass into the best fitting slot and apply pressure.
:
Start away from you, a short scribe to the furthest edge, then all the way back in one scribe. Speed is the essence. If it's a long cut on a work surface, pull the glass towards you so it overlaps the edge, hold either side of the scribe, lift and peel apart like opening a book. If that doesn't work, first blame the scribing, then put a nail or a barbeque skewer exactly under the scribe and push down either side. If that doesn't work, use a "V" notch tile plier/cutter at the edge. For thick plate glass, a Rubi type tile cutter works well
