Thank you for all your lengthy comments and explanations - it has helped me a lot. The reason I used the term 'consultant' was because it seems to be the most versatile in today's job parlance. A call centre operator is a 'customer consultant'. A salesperson in a store is a 'sales consultant'. And yes, a janitor could also be labelled 'cleaning consultant/specialist'. I suppose the use of the word 'manager' nowadays also falls in that category. I just hesitated to use the word as it didn't seem appropriate given the other changes I was being asked to make by the client.
Having read all your comments, I also realise I mistakenly assumed retail marketing in this case, what was meant was wholesale marketing as it pertained to a trade fair. So thank you again, reading everything through made it so much clearer. Love this forum!

The only way I know of to convince non-ENS is to provide them with an explanation, not a link to a dictionary. Else, they might do the same and send you a LEO entry, insisting they're right. If I were in Monika's situation, I would send the client a link such as the one about marketing coordinators below and ask them whether that covers what they did.

A Referent is a Sachbearbeiter. I even talked to someone who used to be in HR and it's the same for Personalreferent. I don't understand where you get consultant from. You may be able to use consultant if this were a government position.

That's why I totally agree with herbalchemist. You should always start by comparing the responsibilities that come with the job. A lot of job titles nowadays are interchangeable or were simply invented.

Maybe Birgit can add something here?

Also, I think we misunderstand each other. I rarely use bilingual sources. They are just not good enough most of the time. I was talking about monolingual sources.

In any case, your link is wrong. This is the actual entry from Collins:
"1. (= Sachbearbeiter) expert

What you posted was a database that isn't even up to date!

trade marketing is definitely not correct (might be in option in relation to hand-crafted goods... but nothing mainstream)... However, from my point of view the distiction should not be between trade and retail, but wholesale and retail. If she was pitching to retailers it would be wholesale marketing, if she was pitching to end users it would be retail marketing... and as she calls it Handelsmarketing in German I assume she means Marketing für den Handel... which would be wholesale marketing...
And regarding the word Manager... it has become a common synonym also for administrator.... What used to be a sales executive in the past is nowadays a sales manager... being a manager does not imply anymore that you have people reporting to you...

If you translate the job title, it'll be Denglish or English with the wrong meaning, so I suggest determining the job role and finding something comparable in English, using Bjoern's links as a guide :)

Cambridge is a dictionary. Merriam-Webster is. An online page containing a database isn't. I am really curious to know when a Sachbearbeiter can be called a consultant. I'm not arguing that can't happen, but I have never seen it being used that way. It doesn't even make sense to me. A Sachbearbeiter is the head of an agency (in government; as a Referent, of course) or an assistant/coordinator. Turning him or her into a consultant sounds odd to me. Doesn't square with this either:

First, I was typing while you posted an answer. I suppose we agree that you can't say for sure that it's retail, unless someone knows something I don't.

Second, specialist is probably right. I don't understand how you or Monika get to consultant. I don't think it's a good choice.

Third, Referent is not a manager, I agree, but hey, we have glorified janitors too nowadays. If someone wants to be Vice President of Early Childhood Education instead of a daycare worker, who am I to argue =)
